Mastroianni named GLVC Player of the Week
USI junior infielder earns the award for the second time this season
– University of Southern Indiana junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni
(Huntersville, North Carolina) was named the GLVC Player of the Week for the second time this season. He becomes the second USI player to earn the weekly award twice in a year.
The first USI player to earn the weekly award twice was Matt Keener, who was named the GLVC Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week in 2004.
Mastroianni helped the Eagles to a 4-1 record in GLVC play last week. He finished 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate in the five contests and delivered five runs, four walks, two RBIss, three steals and was perfect in the field in 22 chances.
He was 1-for-2 in the Eagles' 5-0 win over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan on March 14. Mastroianni scored twice, walked twice and stole a base in the victory.
In USI's series at Northern Kentucky over the weekend, Mastroianni was 6-for-11 with three runs and two RBIs. Included in his solid weekend was a 4-for-5 effort in the Eagles' 9-2 win on March 17. Mastroianni drove in two, scored twice, registered a steal and belted a triple in the series-changing victory.
On the year, he is hitting .493 with 17 RBIs, seven doubles and a league-best 25 runs and 22 stolen bases.
The Eagles (13-6, 4-3 GLVC) return to action 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kentucky Wesleyan College (5-16, 2-5 GLVC). Prior to the scheduled nine-inning GLVC game, USI and KWC will complete the suspended conference game from last Wednesday with the Eagles leading 5-2 in the top of the eighth.
