EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team is nearing the halfway mark of the 2007 campaign and takes to the road to play a doubleheader at the University of Missouri-Rolla Wednesday at noon. Following Wednesday's road doubleheader, the Screaming Eagles return to home to play eight of the next nine at the USI Baseball Field with the lone road game being the "Battle at the Braun" against the University of Evansville.
USI (14-8, 5-5 GLVC) goes to Missouri-Rolla hoping to pick up momentum in the GLVC. The Eagles have been at or above the .500 mark in the conference all season, going 3-3 in the last six games.
USI junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) leads the Eagles at the plate with a .456 batting average, 27 runs scored, and 24 stolen bases. Mastroianni is followed by senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana), who is hitting .420 with a team-high 22 RBIs.
In the GLVC, junior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) is the team's hottest hitter with a .452 batting average in 10 games. Mastroianni follows Beaven with a .400 average.
On the mound, senior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) and junior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) are the team leaders in the win column with 4-0 records. Junior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) has the team's top ERA with a 2.57 in five games and 28.0 innings of work.
Vetter leads the USI hurlers in GLVC action with a 2-0 record, while senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) has a team-best 2.50 ERA in three conference contests.
UM-Rolla (9-12, 2-9 GLVC) starts this week's action having lost six of the last seven games. The Eagles swept a doubleheader from the Miners last year at the USI Baseball Field before the second half of the four-game series was washed out by rain.
This weekend, USI will host Quincy University (13-10, 6-6 GLVC) for a three-game series. The series begins with a noon doubleheader Saturday and concludes with a noon single game on Sunday.
The Hawks, who host Rockhurst for a twin-bill Wednesday, won all four games from the Eagles last season and have won 10 the last 12 meetings between the two squads.
Following the three-game series with Quincy, UM-Rolla will come to the USI Baseball Field for a single game April 3.
