USI loses "Battle at the Braun", 11-6

EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team allowed six runs in the bottom of the eighth in falling to the University of Evansville, 11-6, Wednesday night in the "Battle at the Braun." USI falls to 19-10 overall, while Evansville goes to 20-11.
After the Aces took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Screaming Eagles tied the game 1-1 when freshman catcher Josh Jarboe (Connersville, Indiana) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana). The Aces would respond by retaking the lead, 3-1, with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the third.
Evansville would extend the lead to 4-1 when USI started its first comeback. The Eagles cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth when junior leftfielder Bryan Rudden (Crystal Lake, Illinois) scored when junior designated hitter Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) was hit by a pitch and junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) scored when sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) reached on a walk.
USI would tie the game 4-4 in the seventh when Mastroianni scored after Pleiss reached on a fielder choice. The Aces responded once again in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 5-4.
USI would come back a second time and took the lead, 6-5 in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs. Bruce started the scoring, coming home on a wild pitch, while Mastroianni would scored the go-ahead run on a single by senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana).
The Aces bounced back in the bottom of the eighth by scoring six runs on just three hits and took the lead for the final time, 11-6. The USI pitchers allowed four walks, had three wild pitches, and one pass ball in the frame.
USI was led at the plate Mastroianni, who was three-for-four with three runs scored and a stolen bases.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) took the loss. Dewig (0-1) allowed a run and a walk in one-third of an inning.
The Eagles resume GLVC action this weekend when Southern Illinois University Edwardsville comes to the USI Baseball Field for a four-game series. The doubleheader Saturday starts at 1 p.m., while the first pitch Sunday at noon. The first three games of the series will be considered GLVC action.
