EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept its fifth doubleheader of the season with a pair of victories over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won the GLVC game, 8-5, and the non-conference nightcap, 8-0.

The Screaming Eagles raised their record 24-11 overall and 13-7 in the GLVC, while UMSL falls to 15-12 overall, 11-9 GLVC. The Eagles also reach 13 games over the .500 mark for the first times since the 1999 season.

In the opener, USI scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and eventually win 8-5 in the GLVC game. USI junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, Indiana) led the Eagles in the victory by going four-for-four with three runs scored and a RBI.

On the mound, USI senior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Indiana) picked up the victory in relief. Clark (2-1) allowed two hits and two runs in 2.1 innings of work.

USI senior left-hander Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) earned his first save of the year by pitching the final third of an inning. Junior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) started the game for the Eagles, allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits in 6.1 innings.

Brent Wendholt

In the nightcap, Wendholt, freshman right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana), and junior right-hander Aaron Schmitt (Evansville, Indiana) combined for an 8-0 shutout. Wendholt (3-2) was credited with the victory in the predetermined pitching schedule, allowing just three hits. Geiger allowed two hits and struck out four, while Schmitt allowed a hit and struck out one.

At the plate, USI junior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) led the way with a pair of hits. He had a double, a run scored, and a RBI in the win. Sophomore designated hitter Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) slammed USI's first GLVC home run of the year in the third inning.
