USI sweeps second straight doubleheader

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Lewis University by winning a doubleheader in Romeoville, Illinois, Sunday afternoon. USI won the GLVC game, 3-1, to start the day, and completed the sweep by winning the non-conference game, 7-4.

The Screaming Eagles raise their record to 28-11 overall and 16-7 in the GLVC, while the Flyers fall to 4-31 overall, 3-21 GLVC. USI reaches 17 games over .500 for the first time since 1994 and has won seven straight for the first time since 1997.
In the 3-1 GLVC victory, USI senior right-hander
Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) and freshman right-hander
Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) combined for the victory. Clark (3-1) picked up the victory by scattering six hits, allowing one run, and striking out five in 5.1 innings of work.
Geiger recorded his first collegiate save by pitching the final 3.1 innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.
At the plate, USI scored three times on just five hits. Senior rightfielder
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana), sophomore third baseman
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana), and junior shortstop
Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona) led the way with RBI singles.

The non-conference nightcap saw the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to win 7-4.
The 7-4 win was highlighted by junior second baseman
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina), who tied the USI single season record with his 35th stolen base of the year.
At the plate, Thieroff and Slade led the way with three RBIs and two RBIs, respectively.
USI junior right-hander
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) got back on track by pitching five scoreless innings to earn his fifth victory of the year. Kehrt (5-1) allowed five hits and struck out five.
After sophomore right-hander
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) allowed three runs in the sixth, junior right-hander
Aaron Schmitt (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game and earned his first save of the year. Schmitt pitched 1.1 innings and allowed four hits and one run.
USI will return to action Tuesday in a GLVC doubleheader against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The games are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois.
