USI stumbles in first round of the GLVC Tournament
Eagles will play Friday in the elimination bracket

CASEYVILLE, Ill.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost its first round game of the GLVC Tournament, 3-1, to Saint Joseph's College Thursday afternoon at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The second-seeded Screaming Eagles fall to 36-20, while the fifth-seeded Pumas go to 30-19.
USI jumped on top, 1-0, in the first inning when junior centerfielder Michael Beaven scored on ground ball by junior second basemen Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina). Beaven had advanced to third on a walk, a throwing error by the Saint Joseph's catcher on a pick-off attempt, and a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana).
The Eagles had a chance to open the lead even further in the fourth, but Mastroianni was thrown out at the plate with one out and junior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) grounded out with the bases loaded.
Saint Joseph's got to USI starting pitcher Adam Summers in the seventh inning when it tied the score on a passed ball. The Pumas would take a 3-1 lead in the eighth when they scored twice on a bases loaded wild pitch and a throwing error by Eagles' junior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois).
For the game, Summers (7-4) allowed three runs, one earned, in throwing all nine innings. He also scattered four hits and walked two batters, while striking out four.
The Eagles resume GLVC Tournament action Friday in the loser's bracket when they play the loser of the top seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (35-13) and sixth-seeded University of Indianapolis (29-25). Game time Friday is 2 p.m.
