USI advances in regional with 7-1 win
Summers ties USI single-season record for wins

AKRON, Ohio. – University of Southern Indiana baseball senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) tied a single-season record for wins in leading the Screaming Eagles to a 7-1 victory over Ashland University Thursday evening in Akron, Ohio. USI raises its record to 38-21 overall, while Ashland falls to 38-18.
The 38 victories is the third highest season total in the history of the program.
The Eagles advances to play the winner of the third-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State University that was scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. (CDT). The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CDT).
Summers (8-4) tied the USI single season record for wins in his third attempt, tying seven other former Eagles with eight victories in a year. The senior right-hander allowed nine hits and one run, while striking out four in 8.2 innings of work.
USI junior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt
(Plainfield, Indiana) finished the game by striking out Daktronic North Central Region Player of the Year Casey Jirsa.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second inning. USI junior leftfielder Bryan Rudden
(Crystal Lake, Illinois) started the game with a single and advanced to third on a walk to junior first baseman Matt Pleiss
(Newburgh, Indiana) and a double-steal.
Rudden scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by Ashland third baseman Justin Richards, while Pleiss crossed the plate with the second run on a ground out-RBI by sophomore designated hitter Chad Werry
The Eagles finished the scoring in the first inning when senior rightfielder Hunter Slade
(Newburgh, Indiana) scored on a ground out by sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff
USI junior shortstop Kevin O'Hair
(Scottsdale, Arizona) crossed the plate with the fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Pleiss. O'Hair had advanced to third on single, a sacrifice bunt by junior centerfielder Michael Beaven
(Indianapolis, Indiana), and single by Rudden.
After Ashland scored a run in the fourth, the Eagles got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni
(Huntersville, North Carolina) scored the first of his three runs on a single by Werry after leading off with a double and going to third on a balk to make the score 5-1.
Mastroianni would finish the evening by scoring the final two USI runs for the 7-1 final. The GLVC Player of the Year ended the evening three-for-five with three runs scored, and three stolen bases. He highlighted the ninth inning by stealing home for the second time this season.
