USI's Nichols named CICL Pitcher of the Week
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior right-handed pitcher Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) was named the Central Illinois Collegiate League Pitcher of the Week. Nichols pitched for the DuBois County Bombers this summer after redshirting last spring with an arm injury.
Nichols earned Pitcher of the Week honors after going 1-0 in two appearances and 10 shutout innings. He pitched a complete-game seven-inning shutout to defeat Danville in his only start before coming out of the bullpen to throw three shutout innings against Quincy.
In addition to holding Danville and Quincy scoreless in 10 innings, Nichols allowed only five hits (all singles) and fanned 14 batters.
Nichols joined the Bombers in mid-July and finished the year with a 2-0 record and a 1.04 ERA in helping DuBois County to the CICL regular season and tournament championships.
Joining Nichols on the Bombers was junior infielder Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee), who joins the USI squad this fall. Fink finished his summer with a .264 batting average with 29 runs scored, 21 RBIs, nine doubles, two triples, and a home run in 46 games. The CICL All-Star also had nine stolen bases.
