Eagles baseball picked to win GLVC West in 2008
USI and NKU headline preseason baseball poll
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was picked as the favorite to win the 2008 GLVC West Division in a vote of the conference coaches. USI received four first place votes and earned 34 total points in the poll and was followed by SIU Edwardsville which claimed 32 total points and the three remaining first-place votes.
Drury University, the defending league champion, was selected to place third. The Panthers, who received 27 total points were followed by Rockhurst University (19 total points), Quincy University (15), the University of Missouri-St. Louis (14) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (6).
Northern Kentucky University garnered four first place votes and 34 total points in the GLVC East poll. Saint Joseph's College followed with 29 total points and two first-place votes, while the University of Indianapolis tallied 26 total points and the remaining first-place vote to place third.
Bellarmine University (24 total points), the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (14), Kentucky Wesleyan College (13) and Lewis University (7) rounded out the GLVC East Division.
USI, who is ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball Preseason Top 40, finished 43-23 in 2007. The squad won a school-record 43 games on their way to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series and the program's first North Central Region Crown.
The Eagles enter 2008 under the direction of Tracy Archuleta, who was the 2007 GLVC and North Central Region Coach of the Year. Archuleta returns 20 players, led by six retuning starters in the field and three of the top four hurlers.
USI began practice last week and opens the season on February 8 at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
