Eagles and Flyers set to play four this weekend
USI is fourth in the first region poll
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team resumes GLVC play this weekend when it hosts Lewis University for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is 1 p.m., while Sunday's twin bill is scheduled for noon.
The Screaming Eagles (27-12, 16-3 GLVC) have won nine of their last 10 games, including the 7-4 victory over Northern Kentucky University on Wednesday, and are one game off the pace set by last year's squad that won a school-record 43 games. The victory also pushed the USI record against the GLVC East Division to 7-2.
USI has been led by for the last week by senior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana). Beaven is hitting a blistering .889 in the last three games with four RBIs, a double, and two triples.
For the season, junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) leads the USI hitters with a .399 batting averaging, 26 RBIs, 28 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases.
On the mound, the Eagles have a pair of six-game winners in senior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) and sophomore right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana). Geiger also leads the team with 20 appearances and a 1.79 ERA.
Both Kehrt and Geiger are chasing the USI single-season record of eight wins, which is held by 10 different hurlers and was tied last season by senior left-hander Cory Julian and former USI right-hander Adam Summers.
Already with one record under his belt, USI junior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) leads the squad with a single-season school record of 11 saves, which also are five short of the USI career record.
In the first NCAA Division II North Central Region Poll of the spring, USI was ranked fourth. The GLVC's Saint Joseph's College leads the region poll with Grand Valley State University ranked second and Ashland University third.
The Flyers of Lewis (13-18, 7-11 GLVC) have won three of the last four games after having their three-game wining streak stopped by St. Xavier College on Thursday. Lewis is improved over last season, having won nearly twice as many games in 2008 as it did all of last year.
USI trails the all-time series with Lewis, 45-36, but swept all four games from the Flyers last year.
