USI hit hard in first round of GLVC Tournament

SAUGET, Ill.. – The 26th-ranked University of Sothern Indiana baseball team was pounded by the University of Indianapolis, 14-2, in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. USI, who is the top seed from the GLVC West Division, falls to 36-19 overall, while Indianapolis, the first wild card team, goes to 37-19.
With the loss, the Screaming Eagles go into the loser's bracket and will play Northern Kentucky University at noon Friday. NKU lost Bellarmine University, 1-0, Thursday night at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's SimmonsCooper Complex.
The Greyhounds blasted their way to an 11-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings before the Eagles could get onto the scoreboard. Eagles' senior starter Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) struggled in his second straight start, allowing six earned runs and was plagued by six walks in two-plus innings of work.
USI sophomore reliever Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) and freshman reliever Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) followed Kehrt (8-3) to the mound, but were unable to stop the bleeding. Geiger was touched for three runs in two-thirds of an inning, while Leach allowed five runs (three earned) in four frames.
The Eagles got onto in the fourth and fifth innings. USI junior rightfielder Devon Bouvier (Kennewick, Washington) scored in the fourth on a RBI-single by junior catcher Nate Noland (Henderson, Kentucky), while junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) crossed the plate in the fifth on a RBI-double by junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana).
