USI goes south for three this weekend
Eagles to play Northwest Missouri and #4 Southern Arkansas
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team returns to the southern half of the United States this weekend when it travels Magnolia, Arkansas, to face fourth-ranked Southern Arkansas University and Northwest Missouri State University. The Screaming Eagles are scheduled to play a neutral-site noon game against NWMS, followed by 3 p.m. contest against host SAU on Saturday.
The Eagles conclude the road swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest versus SAU.
USI (1-2) was led in it season-opening series at Armstrong Atlantic State University by junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee), who batted .455 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. The top Eagle hurlers during the first weekend were senior right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana), who pitched seven scoreless innings and picked up a no-decision, and senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana), who got the game-three win in relief for the first USI victory of the season.
This weekend's game will be the first meeting between USI, NWMS, and SAU. NWMS (3-1) has won its last two games, sweeping Arkansas Tech University last weekend, after splitting a pair with the University of Indianapolis to open the season. SAU (9-3) begins the week with a four-game winning streak and has won five of its last six.
The Eagles are scheduled to play at the USI Baseball Field for the first time in 2009 on February 25 when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a non-conference doubleheader.
