– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a neutral site doubleheader sweep of Wayne State University, 9-7 and 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. USI raises its record above .500 for the first time this year to 6-5, while WSU falls to 3-6.
The Screaming Eagles had a big lead early in game one, but had to come from behind to win the opener, 9-7.
USI opened up a 6-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings with three runs in the first, one in the second, and two more in the top of the third. WSU rallied with six runs in the bottom of the third to chase USI junior right-hander Tyler Choate
(Carmi, Illinois) and take a 7-6 lead.
The Eagles' offense got back into gear in the top of the sixth with a three-run rally to retake the lead. USI senior third baseman Alex Thieroff
(Greenfield, Indiana) drove in the tying and go-ahead tallies with a two-run single and scored the insurance run on an RBI-double by senior rightfielder Chad Werry
(New Harmony, Indiana) to make the score 9-7.
On the mound, junior right-hander Trevor Leach
(Danville, Indiana) posted his second win of the season for USI in relief. Leach (2-0) stopped the bleeding in the top of the third and went on to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out four.
The Eagles' senior right-hander Shaun Larsen
closed out the game for USI to post his first save of the season. Larsen allowed only a lead-off hit in the seventh to earn the save.
After spotting WSU a run in the nightcap, the Eagles got on the board with a home run by Thieroff to tie the game, 1-1, in the second and took the lead, 2-1, in the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney
(St. Charles, Missouri). USI sealed the game two win with back-to-back bombs by junior shortstop Wes Fink
(Clarksville, Tennessee) and Thieroff in the bottom of the sixth to conclude the scoring for the 4-1 final.
Thieroff's two home runs in the nightcap give him a team-best three on the season, while Fink is tied with Werry for second with two round-trippers
USI senior right-handed starter Matt Nichols
(Newburgh, Indiana) recorded his first win of the year in game two. Nichols (1-1) allowed five hits, one run, and struck out four in 5.2 innings of work to earn the victory.
The USI bullpen preserved Nichols' win by getting the final four outs. Senior right-hander Michael Dewig
(Haubstadt, Indiana) got the Eagles out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the sixth, while Larsen earned his second save of the day by pitching a perfect seventh inning.
The Eagles return to action Friday and Saturday when they host the Dunn Hospitality Invitational at the USI Baseball Field. USI will play Wayne State College Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Wayne State also plays Spalding University Saturday at 11 a.m.
