Sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney
(St. Charles, Missouri) hit a walk-off, three-run double, in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the University of Southern Indiana baseball team to an 8-7 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field.
The win completed a double-header sweep of the Rangers and after the Screaming Eagles drilled UW-Parkside, 15-3, in the first game.
USI (13-5) went into the ninth inning of game two with a slim 4-3 advantage, but the Rangers scored four times to deny senior pitcher Shaun Larsen
(Tell City, Indiana) his sixth save of the season. Larsen, however, would pick up the victory thanks to some control issues by UW-Parkside's Jack Larsen.
Jack Larsen hit USI junior shortstop Wes Fink
(Clarksville, Tennessee) to start the inning; then walked senior pitcher/designated hitter Alex Thieroff
(Greenfield, Indiana) to put runners at first and second with nobody out. The inning got worse for the UW-Parkside reliever when he hit senior outfielder Chad Werry
(New Harmony, Indiana) in the ensuing at-bat to load the bases.
Following a strikeout, Jack Larsen walked senior centerfielder Royle Beach
(Aurora, Colorado) to plate USI's first run of the inning. After a pitching change, Mooney hit a two-strike pitch deep into centerfield to score all three runners and give the Eagles the four-game series sweep.
Senior infielder/pitcher Tyler Choate
(Carmi, Illinois) aided the Eagles offensively as he went 4-of-5 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Shaun Larsen (2-2) was credited with the victory despite the tough outing in the ninth inning. Only one of the runs he gave up was charged to his ERA.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles used a pair of five run innings to rout the Rangers (0-17). Werry went 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Mooney also went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior first baseman Caleb Ehmke
(Waterloo, Indiana) was 2-of-3 with an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Trevor Leach
(Danville, Indiana) improved to 4-0 after scattering three runs, two earned, off six hits in seven innings of work. Leach struck out a pair of batters and issued just one walk to pick up the complete-game victory.
USI, which has won 10 straight games, just two shy of the all-time school record, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the University of Indianapolis in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m.
