USI falls short at Evansville
Box Score: Evansville 3, Southern Indiana 2
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team fell short in the "Battle at the Braun", losing 3-2 to the University of Evansville Wednesday evening. USI goes to 28-11 overall, while Evansville rises to 16-18.
The Screaming Eagles put a pair of runs on the scoreboard first on a two-single down the leftfield line by sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) in the top of the fourth. Senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) started the rally with a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a double to left by senior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana).
The Aces cut the Eagles lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single after runner reached second on a USI miscue in the outfield. Evansville manufactured a pair of runs the next inning to take the lead, 3-2, aided by a USI wild pitch.
From that point, both pitching staffs took command and shut down the offenses for the final innings. Senior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three runs, two earned.
USI resumes GLVC West Division play and the seven-game road swing this weekend when it travels to Missouri University of Science & Technology for a four-game series in Rolla, Missouri. The first pitch of the Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders is scheduled for noon each day.
