USI makes it a clean sweep over Missouri S&T
Leach set USI single-season record for wins
Box Score Game 1: Southern Indiana 15, Missouri S&T 2
Box Score: Southern Indiana 8, Missouri S&T 7
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team made it a clean sweep of Missouri University of Science & Technology by taking both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri. USI won game one, 15-2, and the nightcap, 8-7.
The wins push the Screaming Eagles to 32-11 overall, 20-4 GLVC, and 12-4 West Division, while the Miners fall to 13-29, 7-12 GLVC, and 6-9 West.
Eagles' senior right-hander Trevor Leach
(Danville, Indiana) set a new USI single-season record with his ninth victory in the game one. Leach (9-0) pitched two perfect innings of relief of senior right-handed starter Alex Thieroff
(Greenfield, Indiana) to get his sixth win out of the bullpen this season. The sophomore right-hander also has won three of his five starts this year.
The nine wins breaks a record that was established in 1989 and was matched 10 times in the last 20 years.
Offensively, USI's 16-hit attack was led by senior centerfielder Royle Beach
(Aurora, Colorado). Beach was four-for-four with two runs scored, three RBIs, and a double.
The Eagles also got two-RBI performances from freshman second baseman Brad Vance
(Louisville, Kentucky), junior centerfielder Brad Mangold
(Evansville, Indiana), and Thieroff.
In the nightcap, USI senior right-hander Shaun Larsen
(Tell City, Indiana) came to the rescue by pitching the longest outing of his career to win his fifth of the season. Larson (5-2) pitched 7.2 innings and struck out a career-high 13 batters, while allowing six hits and three runs. Only one of the runs was earned in Missouri S&T's three-run fifth.
USI senior starting right-hander Michael Dewig
(Haubstadt, Indiana) and freshman right-hander Shad Macke
(Evansville, Indiana) preceded Larsen to the mound and spotted the Miners a four-run lead after two innings. The Eagles rebounded offensively with a six-spot in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Missouri S&T responded by retaking the lead, 7-6, with the three-runs off of Larsen in the bottom of the fifth.
The Eagles tied the score, 7-7, in the sixth and pushed the game-winning run across in the ninth. Thieroff, who had led off the ninth with a double, scored the eventual game-winner on a fielder's choice by junior shortstop Wes Fink
Beach also led the offensive attack in the nightcap, pounding out two-more hits and driving in two more runs.
With the scheduling changes this week, the USI-Bellarmine University non-conference game that was scheduled for Wednesday has been pushed back to Thursday at 3 p.m. in Louisville, Kentucky. The Eagles return to action in the Tri-State when they host Indiana State University at Bosse Field Saturday at 7 p.m.
