USI going to the Midwest Regional
Eagles goint to NCAA Tournament for second time in three seasons
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team has earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time three seasons and will be the third seed in the Midwest Regional. The regional will be hosted by Ashland University May 14-17 at the V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
V.A. Memorial Stadium is the home of the Frontier League's Chillicothe Paints.
USI (37-17) will play Northern Kentucky University (40-20), who won the GLVC Tournament championship today and is the fourth seed, in the first round on Thursday. The start time is still to be announded.
In addition to the USI-NKU match-up, top-seeded Ashland (41-13-1) is scheduled to start the regional against sixth-seeded Rockhurst University (35-2) and second-seeded Grand Valley State University (41-13-1) will take on fifth-seeded University of Indianapolis (40-19). Indianapolis fell to NKU in the GLVC Tournament championship game on Sunday after eliminating USI late Saturday evening.
USI will be making its seventh appearance in the NCAA II Tournament. The Screaming Eagles won their first regional championship in 2007 and finished as a semifinalist in the Division II Championship Series.
Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 23-30 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive College and the town of Cary, North Carolina.
