USI drops second round regional game to Indianapolis
Box Score: Indianapolis 7, Southern Indiana 3
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped its first game in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional in falling to the University of Indianapolis, 7-3, Friday evening in Chillicothe, Ohio. The regional is being played at V.A. Memorial Stadium, the home of the Frontier League's Chillicothe Paints.
USI did not waste anytime getting on the scoreboard in the first inning when senior outfielder Chad Werry
(New Harmony, Indiana) hit a two-out, two-run blast to left center to give the Screaming Eagles a 2-0 lead. The home run was Werry's career-best eighth of the season.
The Greyhounds responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run round tripper to take a 3-2 lead. UIndy upped the lead to 5-2 with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the third after USI did not score after loading bases in the top half of the inning. The victory for the Greyhound would be sealed with single tallies in the sixth and seventh.
The Screaming Eagles loaded the bases in the ninth inning and closed the gap with a run for the 7-3 final.
USI junior right-handed starter D.J. Smith
(Vincennes, Indiana) was chased in the bottom of the fourth. Smith (6-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out two.
Finishing the game on the mound for USI was sophomore right-hander Trevor Leach
(Danville, Indiana). Leach, who tied a USI single-season record with his 30th appearance of the year, went five innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits. He also struck out six Greyhound batters.
After the two-run first, UIndy starting right-hander Cory White shut down the Eagles' offense. He allowed only four hits and two runs, while striking out 10 in seven innings of work. Right-handers Jordan Tiegs and David Early finished the final two innings for the Greyhounds.
The third-seeded Eagles (38-18) continue NCAA II Midwest Regional play Saturday in the elimination bracket when they take on top-seeded Ashland University (42-14-1) at 11 a.m. (CST). Ashland fell into the elimination game after losing to fourth-seeded Northern Kentucky University, 7-6, in the second game of the day.
Second-seeded Grand Valley State University (42-14-1) eliminated fifth-seeded Rockhurst University, 10-8, in 12 innings in the first game of the day. UIndy (42-19) is the only undefeated team in the tournament, while USI, Ashland, NKU, and Grand Valley State all have one loss.
