Perkins named Player to Watch by Collegiate Baseball
University of Southern Indiana junior shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) has been named a Player to Watch in the NCAA Division II by Collegiate Baseball Magazine. The 2002 NCAA II Pre-Season All-Americans, Players to Watch, and Newcomers to Watch are chosen by the American Baseball Coaches Association’s All-American Committee.
Perkins, who saw action at shortstop and designated hitter as a sophomore, was the team's leading hitter. He missed five games with a back injury, but led the team with a .393 average, .318 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and a .531 slugging percentage.
The Lafayette Jefferson High School graduate also scored 42 runs, had 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 33 RBIs. He struck out only 15 times in 227 plate appearances in 2001, once every 15 trips to the plate.
The Screaming Eagles, who are entering their ninth season under USI Head Coach Mike Goedde, will be looking for a second consecutive trip the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament after finishing fourth with a 15-12 league mark last spring.
