USI PICKS UP TWO

Coutee signs with USI

The University of Southern Indiana basketball team announced signing of 6’6” forward Dennis Coutee, to a letter of intent for the 2002-03 basketball season. Coutee, a freshman at Riverside Community College, will have three years of eligibility at USI.

As a freshman at RCC, Coutee averaged 19.8 point, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 37 games for the Tigers. His 19.8 points per game ranked third in the Orange Empire Conference, while his 33 points in a single game ranked fourth. He also was named to the prestigious All-Orange Empire Conference team, leading RCC to a 28-9 overall record.

Prior to attending RCC last year, Coutee graduated from Jeffersonville High School where he was first team All-State as a senior, averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. He also was an Indiana All-Star, a NIKE All-American and was selected for the USA Youth Development Festival.

“Dennis is a very special player, who can play inside and out,” said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes, who tied a USI record with 22 victories in his first season at the helm. “It will be great to have Dennis for three years because he is the type of player to build a program around. Coach Hostetter has worked very hard to bring Dennis home to Indiana and deserves the credit.”

The USI Screaming Eagles are coming off its 10th straight 20-win season with a record of 22-8 overall, going 17-4 in the final 21 games after a 5-4 start. The Eagles were fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 14-6 league record and advanced to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament in 2002.

Goff transfers to USI

The University of Southern Indiana basketball team announced the transfer of Alan Goff, a 6’4” guard/forward, from Lehigh University. Goff will be a senior in 2002-03 and will have one season of eligibility.

Goff, a graduate of Terre Haute North High School, averaged 6.0 ppg and 2.6 rpg in 28 games for the Mountain Hawks in 2001-02. He played in 57 games for Lehigh, averaging 7.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in two seasons.

Prior to attending Lehigh, Goff played two seasons for Vincennes University, averaging 14 points and led the team with 4.5 assists per game. He helped the Trailblazers to a 34-6 overall record and a number-five ranking nationally.

Goff finished his prep career at Terre Haute North by earning first team All-State honors as a junior and senior and scored over 1,200 career points, which the second best total in the history of the program. He scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out five assists a game as a senior.

“Alan is someone we recruited both in high school and junior college, but wanted that Division I dream,” said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes, who tied a USI record by a rookie head coach with 22 victories. “Now, he has decided he wants to comeback and compete for a championship.

“He is a great student athlete, who is an all-around utility player. I’m very excited to add Alan’s experience to our program.”
