USI menís basketball releases 2002-03 schedule
The non-stop, fast-paced action that is Screaming Eagles basketball commences in November according to the 2002-03 University of Southern Indiana menís basketball schedule that was released today. The Eagles will tip-off the preseason on November 9 and November 16 with exhibition games at the Physical Activities Center.
The regular season starts with a pair of non-conference home games with the Eagles hosting Wilberforce University on November 23 and the Henderson State University on November 26. Henderson State, a Division II institution in the Gulf South Conference, was an NCAA Division II regional semifinalist with a 21-7 record last spring.
In addition to the Henderson State and Wilberforce, the non-conference schedule includes a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the High Desert Classic (teams to be determined) on December 14-15 and home games with Oakland City University on December 18, Lock Haven University on December 29, and the University of Illinois-Springfield on February 8.
The Eagles face one of the toughest Great Lakes Valley Conference schedules ever as the team plays four of the first six league games and four of the last six conference contests on the road. USI embarks on its quest for a GLVC title on November 30 at the Sportscenter in Owensboro, Kentucky, against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The first GLVC home game is on December 5 against the University of Indianapolis. USI hosts KWC, the Division II Tournament runner-up, on February 8 and Lewis University, the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional runner-up, on February 22. The GLVC Tournament is March 5-8 at Roberts Stadium.
The USI Homecoming game is on February 1 when the Eagles host Quincy University.
Nearly all of the USI conference contests are afternoon starts this season (3:15 p.m. at the PAC) with the exception of the home game with KWC.
The Eagles are coming off its 10th straight 20-win season and are hoping to return to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 10th time in 11 seasons. USI is under the direction of Head Coach Rick Herdes, who tied the University record for wins by a first-year head coach with a 22-8 record.
Herdes returns sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana), the GLVC Freshman of the Year who averaged 13.4 ppg in his first year of collegiate basketball, and junior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois), who averaged 12.2 ppg and 6.6 rpg.
In addition to his returning players, Herdes has added sophomore guard/forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana), who averaged 19.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg at Riverside Community College senior guard/forward Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana), who average 7.2 ppg and 2.9 rpg in two seasons at Lehigh University junior forward/center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida), a transfer from Central Florida Community College who averaged 7.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg last season and junior forward/center Sam Beyer (Roanoke, Illinois), who comes USI from Illinois Valley Community College after averaging 7.9 ppg and 7.0 rpg in 2001-02.
