USI to host Tornatta Stars in an exhibition game Saturday
The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team will host the Tornatta Stars at the Physical Activities Center Saturday, November 9. Game time will be 7:30 p.m.
The contest with the Tornatta Stars is the first of a two-game exhibition schedule for the Screaming Eagles. USI will host the Akron Wingfoots a week from Saturday, November 16, in a 7:30 p.m. match-up.
Since 1990, the Eagles are 11-4 in exhibition games after posting a 1-1 record last November. USI defeated the Stars 89-81, but lost the Pella Windows, 90-84, at the PAC. Center Ronnie Griffin led the Eagles with a 14.5 scoring average during the 2001 exhibition action.
In 2002-03, USIís top returnees are sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) and junior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois). Brunson, the GLVC Freshman of the Year, is USIís top returning scorer at 13.4 points per game, while Harris was the teamís best on the boards last year with 6.6 rebounds per game. Harris also average 12.2 points a game last season.
A new edition to the squad this year is sophomore forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana). Coutee, a Street & Smithís College Basketball Preseason All-American, averaged 19.8 points and 6.0 rebounds at Riverside Community College as a freshman.
USI returns to action under the direction of Head Coach Rick Herdes. Herdes tied a USI record last season with 22 victories as a rookie head coach.
The Tornatta Stars feature six familiar faces to USI fans. The roster includes former All-GLVC performers Brian Huebner and Kimon Green, along with Josh Kain, Wes Attebury, and Rick Eberhard. The team is coached by Troy Tornatta, a former Eagle, and Dirkk Surles.
