Geoff is one of the best shooters I have ever seen,” said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes. “I praise my staff on the job they have done this fall. To have quality high school players and a mix of experience from junior college and transfers is a great combination for the future of our program.”

The Screaming Eagles, who were 22-8 in 2001-02, play their final exhibition game Saturday, November 16, against the Akron Wingfoots in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Physical Activities Center. USI open the regular season Saturday, November 23, at the PAC against Wilberforce University.

Gordon signs with USI

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team announced the signing of 6’2” guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) for the 2003-04 season. Gordon transfers to USI from the University of Miami (Flordia) and will have one year of eligibility.

In the Gordon’s only season with the Hurricanes, he averaged 6.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 19 games during 2000-01.

Prior to playing for Miami, Gordon was a first team NJCAA All-American at Brevard Junior College in Cocoa, Florida, when he averaged 27.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in 1999-2000. His 27.5 points ranked first in the nation among Division I junior colleges and ranked second in the nation among all junior colleges.

He was named the Southern Conference and Florida Junior College Player of the Year for his efforts as a sophomore. Brevard was 28-7 overall and won the NJCAA Region VIII Tournament championships in 1999-2000.

Gordon played his high school basketball at Palm Bay High School where he was All-Conference, All-District, and the team Most Valuable Player. He averaged 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists as a senior.

“Joe is an impact player at the guard position and his presence will be felt right away,” said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes. “He will be tremendous for USI because his talents and our style of play fit together nicely.”
