USI men’s basketball defeats #12 NKU

The University of Southern Indiana extended is home winning streak to 22 games after defeating 12th–ranked Northern Kentucky University, 87-82, at the Physical Activities Center Saturday afternoon. USI raises its record to 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while NKU falls to 14-3 overall, 8-2 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles have won six of their last seven conference games after losing the first two of the year. The 22 game home winning streak is the second longest in the NCAA Division II.

The contest went back-and-forth with the Norse winning the first half, 45-38. The Eagles got back into the contest early in the second half, using an 18-9 run to tie the game 56-56 with 16:03 to play in the game.

The score was tied for the final time at 79-79 with 3:14 to play. Sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) gave USI the lead for good, 82-79, with a three-point field with 2:42 to play, while senior guard/forward Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana) sealed the victory with a pair of free throws, 85-82 with :20 seconds to play.

USI outscored NKU 49-37 in the second half of a game that featured 14 ties.

The Eagles were led by senior forward Diond’re Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) with 21 points, hitting nine of 11 from the field. Brunson followed Givens with 17 points of his own, while sophomore forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana) dropped in 16 points and junior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) record 15 points.

Coutee also led the Eagles with nine rebounds, while Harris grabbed five.

The Eagles were 3-0 during the homestand, but must go on the road for a pair of GLVC games. USI starts the road trip at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, Thursday, January 23. Game time at Rensselaer is 7:30 p.m. The squad will return to the PAC Thursday, January 30, when they host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
