USI rises to 19th in national poll
Screaming Eagles to face Pumas in GLVC first round

Game Notes

The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team rose to 19th in the latest NABC/Division II Bulletin Top 25 poll on Tuesday. From the GLVC, Kentucky Wesleyan College remained first in the poll, while NKU rose to 10th and Lewis University fell to 20th.

The Screaming Eagles, who are 22-5 overall this year, will play Saint Joseph's College in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday, March 6. Game time for the USI-SJC game Thursday is 6 p.m.

Winners of 15 of their last 16 games, the Eagles are one of the hottest teams in the NCAA Division II. USI, which has gone 3-2 against teams in the top 25 since January, enters the GLVC Tournament as the number two seed.

USI is led by senior forward Diond're Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) with 14.7 ppg. Givens, who is having his best season as an Eagle, was especially tough on the Pumas this year, averaging 19.5 ppg and 8.0 rpg.

Givens is followed in the scoring column for USI by sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana), who is averaging 13.4 ppg junior center Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois), USI's hottest player with 12.9 ppg this year and sophomore forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana), who is posting 10.4 ppg. Coutee was second on the USI team with 18.5 ppg against SJC.

The Pumas will enter GLVC Tournament action with an 11-16 overall record and have lost two of their last three games. They are led by junior center Corey Seegers with 18.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Seegers averaged 30.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg in SJC's two losses to the Eagles this year.

USI leads the series with SJC, 35-16, and has won the last three. The Eagles also won the last meeing with SJC at Roberts Stadium in 2000-01.
