USI men’s basketball has three named All-GLVC

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team had three players named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference teams in a vote of the league’s head coaches. Senior forward Diond’re Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) was named to the first team, while junior center Billy Harris (Carbondale, Indiana) and sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) were named second team and honorable mention, respectively.

Givens, who also was named Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region, is having a career-season for the NCAA Division II Tournament bound Screaming Eagles. He is leading the team with a 14.4 ppg scoring average, 5.7 ppg above his career average.

The native of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, also has been moving up the USI all-time lists for scoring and rebounding this season. Givens has moved into seventh all-time in scoring with 1,214 career points and eighth all-time in rebounding with 559 boards. He needs just seven rebounds to pass two former USI All-Americans – Cortez Collins (564) and Julian Hall (565) – for sixth place all-time.

Joining Givens in making a first appearance on the All-GLVC team is Harris. A 6’4” undersized center, Harris was named to the second team after averaging 13.0 ppg and a team-best 7.7 rpg. He also has moved up the USI all-time lists, ranking 10th in rebounding with 533 career boards and 16th in scoring with 995 career points.

With five more points, Harris will become the 15th player in USI history to score over 1,000 career points.

Brunson makes a second straight appearance on the honorable mention All-GLVC team. Last season’s GLVC Freshman of the Year is second on the team with 13.2 ppg and is hitting 89.9 percent from the charity stripe (89-99).

The Eagles, 23-6 overall this season, will leave for Houghton, Michigan, and the Great Lakes Regional Wednesday, March 12. USI, the fourth seed, will play Lewis University, the fifth seed, in the first round Friday, March 14. Game time Friday is 7:30 p.m. (CT).
