Eagles start GLVC action with four straight road games

Game Notes

The 2nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team will open the 2003-04 GLVC campaign with four straight road games, beginning with Bellarmine University Saturday, November 29. Game time Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky, is 7 p.m. (CT).

The Screaming Eagles have started the year 2-0 after posting a 103-73 victory over Lincoln University and a 98-41 win over Oakland City University this week. The Eagles were led by senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois), who has averaged 20.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg.

Harris, who moved into USI's top six all-time in rebounding and top 12 all-time in scoring, is 15-of-18 from the field (.833) and is a perfect 1.000 from the line.

Following close behind Harris is senior guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) with 17.5 ppg and junior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) with 15.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg.

The Knights of Bellarmine welcome the Eagles to Knights Hall with a 1-2 record. Bellarmine started the year with a 101-83 loss at Kentucky State University and earned a split in its Joe Reibel Tip-Off Tournament with a 85-78 win over Oakland City and a 76-71 loss to Winston Salem State University.

Bellarmine senior forward Troy Brown leads four Knights in double figures with 21.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg. He is followed by senior forward Bruce Johnson with 13.0 ppg and 5.7 rpg.

The Eagles enter Saturday's conference opener hoping to avoid the same result they had last season at Knights Hall. The Eagles could not hold onto a 20-point lead, falling to Bellarmine, 82-80, last year. USI did bounce back in the second meeting of the year, defeating the Knights, 107-82.

USI will look to senior forward Clarence Chillers (Chicago, Illinois) to continue to have the hot hand against the Knights. Chillers led the Eagles against the Knights with 16.0 ppg by hitting 92.9 percent of his shots (13-14).

The Eagles, who are shooting for team-win number 600, leads the all-time series with Bellarmine, 36-24, and has won eight of nine since 2000.

After Saturday evening, the Eagles will travel to 12th-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan College Monday, December 1 the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday, December 4 and Quincy University Saturday, December 6. USI's first GLVC home game will not be until Friday, January 2, when Lewis University comes to the Physical Activities Center.
