USI menís basketball in the NCAA II top spot for the first since 2000-01

The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team is ranked #1 in the first NABC/ Division II Bulletin Top 25 of the 2003-04 regular season. USI, which was ranked second in the preseason poll, moved into the top spot after starting the season with an 8-0 overall record, 4-0 in the GLVC.
This is the seventh time in 10 seasons that the Screaming Eagles have been ranked number one at one point during a season. The last time the Eagles were in the top spot was in the 2000-01 season when they started the year 16-0, the best start ever for the team.
In 2003-04, USI is 8-0 for only the fifth time in the history of the program. The Eagles have started the season with a perfect 8-0 record in 1986-87, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2000-01, and this season.
In addition to USI, the GLVC is represented by the University of Indianapolis (7-0), which is 16th, and Kentucky Wesleyan College (3-2), which is 23rd. Lewis University (6-1) received votes.
In Division II, the Eagles are one of 19 teams that are still undefeated (records as of December 14) and one of 12 undefeated teams in the top 25. In addition to USI and Indianapolis from the Great Lakes Region, Michigan Tech University also is undefeated at 8-0 and ranked 12th.
The Eagles resume action Friday and Saturday, December 19-20, when they host the USI/Sprint Challenge at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which will play the 7:30 p.m. contest each evening, will play the University of North Alabama (4-4) Friday evening and Ferris State University (3-5) Saturday night. Indianapolis, which will play in the 5:15 p.m. contest each day, takes on Ferris State on Friday and North Alabama on Saturday.
Senior guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) currently leads the Eagles in scoring with 14.1 ppg, while senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) is second on the team with 12.5 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg.
