USI gets win on the road

Kenosha, WI – The #12-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team won on the road for the first time in 2004 with a 90-82 win over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday evening in Kenosha. USI raises its record to 16-3 overall and 9-3 in the GLVC, while UWP falls to 6-12 overall, 2-9 GLVC.

The first half was a story of runs by both squads. The Rangers jumped out to a 6-0 lead when the Screaming Eagles went on an 18-6 run to lead 18-12 with 13:00 to play in the half. UWP bounced back to take the lead 35-26 at the midway through the first half with 23-8 run.

USI responded with a 21-6 run of its own to take a 47-41 halftime lead into the locker run. USI junior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) led the squad in the first half, scoring all 15 of his points in the first stanza.

The Eagles extended their lead to 10 points, 56-46, in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Rangers fought back into the game. UWP got the lead down to one at 56-55, but that would be as close as the Rangers could get.

USI rebuilt the lead enlarging the lead to as many as 11 points in the final three minutes. The Rangers did make a late run after the Eagles missed four straight free throws in the final 1:30.

Senior guard Avery Queen (Moreno Valley, California), freshman forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana), and senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) combined to hit six straight free throws in the final minute to seal the game.

Junior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) led the way in the scoring column for USI with 20 points, 14 coming in the second half.

USI concludes the two-game road swing Saturday, January 31, when it travels Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. Game time Saturday is 3 p.m.

The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the Physical Activities Center Thursday, February 5, when they host Northern Kentucky University for a GLVC doubleheader. The USI-NKU game begins a three-game homestand for the Eagles.
