USI men’s basketball to play KWC in first round of regional
Three USI players earn post-season honors

The University of Southern Indiana is in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 11th time in 12 years and will play Kentucky Wesleyan College in the first round of the Great Lakes Regional at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday, March 13. Game time Saturday is noon.

The Screaming Eagles, who lost a 74-73 thriller to the Panthers on Saturday, enter the tournament with a 23-6 record and are the number three seed. USI also finished the regular season ranked 13th nationally.

The Panthers, who won the GLVC Tournament over the weekend, enter national tournament action with a 22-7 record.

In addition to USI-KWC first round match-up on Saturday, top-seed and host Lewis will play eighth-seeded Wayne State University second-seeded University of Findlay will play the seventh-seeded University of Indianapolis and fifth-seeded Gannon University will play fourth-seeded Michigan Tech University. After Saturday’s first round, the regional semifinals are Sunday, March 14, while the finals will be Tuesday, March 16.

Tip-off times for the semifinals are 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., while the championship game will have a 7 p.m. start time.

USI senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) led three Screaming Eagles to receive post-season honors at the GLVC Tournament. Harris and senior center John Oden (St. Louis, Missouri) were named second team All-GLVC, while freshman forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) was named the GLVC’s Freshman of the Year.

Harris, who also earned All-Tournament honors, leads the Eagles in rebounding this year with 7.3 rpg and ranks third on the team with 10.4 ppg. Oden is tops in the scoring column for the Eagles with 12.4 ppg and has a team-high six double-doubles this season.

Van Winkle tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 9.6 ppg and ranks fifth in the GLVC in three-point field goals made per game (2.3) and three-point field goal percentage (45.8 percent, 66-144).
