USI menís basketball starts regular season Monday
EVANSVILLE, Ind.Ė The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team opens the 2004-05 regular season campaign Monday evening at the Physical Activities Center, hosting Olivet Nazarene University Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The #1-ranked Screaming Eagles are coming off of a 0-2 exhibition season, falling to the University of Evansville, 88-75, and the University of Cincinnati, 82-62.USI was led in the exhibition games by newcomer Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida), a junior forward who averaged 12.5 ppg and 7.5 ppg.
USI senior center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) and junior guard David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) followed Thompson in the scoring column with 11.0 ppg each.
The Eagles begin 2004-05 in search of their 13th straight 20-win season and their 12th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in the last 13 years. USI was 28-7 in 2003-04, in route to its third appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament championship game.
Olivet Nazarene comes to the PAC three games into their 2004-05 schedule. The Tigers opened the season with a 98-88 victory at home over Missouri Baptist University, followed by a loss to Benedictine College, 64-57, and a win over Mid-America Nazarene College at the Pioneer Classic in Olathe, Kansas.
The Tigers are led after three games by sophomore center Travis Meeks, who is averaging 14.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Junior forward Zach Johnson follows Meeks in the scoring with 13.3 ppg.
USI leads the all-time series with Olivet Nazarene, 3-0, and won the last meeting at the PAC, 92-71, in the 2001-02 season. USI was led in the victory by the 18-point performance of guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana).
