#1 USI plays on the road at North Alabama
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The top-ranked University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team travels to Florence, Alabama, for the first time to play the University of North Alabama Saturday at noon. The noon start time is a change from the originally scheduled 4 p.m. tip-off.
The Screaming Eagles hope to ride the momentum built in the season-opening victory over Olivet Nazarene University Monday evening. USI was led in the 97-70 victory by junior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida), who had a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Thompson was followed in the scoring column by junior forward Stacy Pearson (Miami, Florida), who had 14 points junior guard Danny Gibson (Madison, Indiana), who had 13 points off the bench and senior forward Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida), who had 12 points. Pearson followed Thompson with eight rebounds.
The victory also marked the 19th straight year that the Eagles have started the season with a win.
The UNA Lions have started the year 2-0 after posting wins over Nova Southeastern University, 72-64, and Stillman College, 99-89. The Lions were led in the two contests by senior guard Pervis Key, who averaged 17.5 ppg, and junior forward A.J. Gordon, who posted 16.5 ppg. Junior forward Jerrell Vinson led the team with 8.0 rpg in the two wins.
USI defeated UNA, 93-75, last season and leads the all-time series, 2-0. UNA’s Key led all scorers last season with a game-high 22 points, while USI center John Oden led five Eagles to score in double-figures with 19 points.
Following the road trip to Florence, the Eagles will open the GLVC schedule at home for the first time since 2001-02 when they host the University of Indianapolis on November 26.
