USI men’s basketball begins GLVC action at the PAC Friday night
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the first time in three seasons, the University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team will open the GLVC schedule at the Physical Activities Center when it hosts the University of Indianapolis Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles finish the first homestand of the season by playing Saint Joseph’s College Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
The Eagles (1-1), who were picked to win the GLVC by the league coaches a month ago, are looking to get back on track after suffering a 78-75 loss to the University of North Alabama last weekend. USI started the year with a 97-70 victory over Olivet Nazarene University last week.
After two games, USI is led by newcomer Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) with 18.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg. The junior forward started the year with a double-double, posting 28 points and 11 rebounds in the season-opening win over Olivet Nazarene.
Eagles’ junior forward Stacy Pearson (Miami, Florida) and senior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) follow Thompson in the scoring column with 11.5 ppg and 11.0 ppg, respectively. Pearson also is second to Thompson with 6.5 rpg.
The University of Indianapolis (1-0) comes to the PAC after opening the season with a 77-65 victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield. The Greyhounds were led in the victory by senior guard David Logan, who had 22 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Last season, Logan led the GLVC with 20.6 ppg and helped the Greyhounds to a 20-10 record and to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
USI leads the all-time series with Indianapolis, 40-14, and have won nine of the last 11 since 2000.
The Eagles finish their season-opening homestand by hosting the Pumas of Saint Joseph’s College. SJC (1-1) opened the year by stumbling at home to future GLVC member, Drury University, 85-84, but got on track with a 90-82 home win over Ashland University.
SJC freshman guard/forward Devin Thomas leads the team with 22.0 ppg after two games, while junior guard/forward Sullivan Sykes is averaging 18.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg.
The Pumas open the 2004-05 GLVC schedule at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday evening before traveling to Evansville to play the Eagles. USI leads the all-time series 37-17, and has won 10 of the last 11 since 2000.
