Screaming Eagles close out one year, begin another
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team closes out 2005 and begins 2006 by hosting a two-game homestand. USI (12-1) will play its finals non-conference games when it hosts Lees-McRae College (2-4) Saturday at 3 p.m. and Oakland City University (5-5) Monday at 7:30 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles are 32-3 in the 2005 calendar year, a winning percentage of .914.
The Screaming Eagles are coming off a successful 2-0 showing at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, hosted by the University of Indianapolis before Christmas. USI came from behind to defeat Ferris State University, 88-81, and screamed past Wayne State University 78-59.
USI senior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) led the Eagles during the tournament with 17.5 ppg. Junior guard Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) followed Thompson with 11.5 ppg during the two games, while senior guards Danny Gibson (Madison, Indiana) and David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) dropped in 11 ppg each.
For the season, Thompson also leads the way for USI with 18.6 ppg and 9.3 rpg. Hall is second on the team with 15.5 ppg, while Bryant is scoring 11.0 ppg.
Lees-McRae comes to USI for the first time having won two of its last three games, both on the road. The Bobcats are 0-4 at home this season.
This will be the first meeting between the Eagles and Bobcats in the history of the program.
While USI and Lees-McRae will be playing for the first time, the Eagles and the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City will be facing each other for the 44th time. OCU, who will play at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday prior to playing USI, is playing .500 basketball this season.
The Mighty Oaks recently broke a two-game losing streak with a win at home over Crossroads College. OCU is 3-3 on the road or on a neutral court this year.
USI leads the series with OCU, 33-10.
