USI begins defense of GVLC Tournament title Friday
#11 Eagles to play #2 Saint Joseph's in first round

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team begins defense of the GLVC Tournament Championship Friday at Roberts Stadium when it plays 2nd- ranked Saint Joseph's College in the first round. Game time is 8:30 p.m. (CST).

If the Screaming Eagles (25-5, 14-5 GLVC) succeed on Friday evening, the next opponent on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. will be the winner of the Drury University/Bellarmine University game. The GLVC Championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Eagles rose in the rankings this week, coming in at 11th. Along with Saint Joseph's and USI, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville fell into a tie for 22nd.

Entering the GLVC Tournament, USI was 6-4 against the field. The Eagles averaged 79.5 point per game against the tournament opponents, while allowing 69.9 points per contest.

USI also is looking to go over .500 at Roberts Stadium this week. The Eagles have played 79 games at Roberts, including 48 homes games between 1970 and 1974 the GLVC Playoff game with Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1981 the National Shootout Tournaments in 1989 and 1990 and the GLVC Tournaments in 1999-2005. USI is 34-35 overall and12-6 at the stadium since 1999.

USI won its only game with Saint Joseph's this year, 98-67, at the Physical Activities Center. Senior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) and senior guard Danny Gibson (Madison, Indiana) led the way with 22 points each. Thompson also had a game-high 12 rebounds in the victory.

The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Pumas, 40-18, and has won 12 of the last 15 meetings.

The Pumas (27-2, 17-2 GLVC) have won eight straight since losing to the Eagles in January. Saint Joseph's, the likely host for the Great Lakes Regional in two weeks, finished the 2005-06 regular season with three straight wins at home.
