USI's Thompson honored as co-Player of the Year
First Eagle to earn award since 2001
University of Southern Indiana senior forward Chris Thompson
was named co-GLVC Player of the Year in an awards presentation during the conference basketball tournament at Roberts Stadium Friday afternoon. Thompson, who shared award with Saint Joseph's College senior forward Sullivan Sykes, is the first USI player to win the award since 2001.
In addition to the Player of the Year award, Thompson was named first team All-GLVC. The senior forward also has been named the Division II Bulletin national Player of the Month twice, the GLVC Player of the Week four times, and the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic Most Outstanding Player in 2005-06.
Thompson is the Eagles' top and the GLVC's second leading scorer with 18.8 points per game and is the league's top rebounder with 9.7 rebounds per game. He has had a team-high 15 double-doubles this season, just three short of former USI All-American and GLVC Player of the Year Chris Bowles' 18 in 1991-92.
The Starke, Florida, native posted a career-high 35 points in the season opener against Caldwell College and has tied a career-high by grabbing 15 rebounds in a game twice this season.
Along with Thompson, senior guard Danny Gibson
(Madison, Indiana) and junior guard Melvin Hall
(Evansville, Indiana) were named honorable mention All-GLVC. Gibson leads the Eagles and the GLVC with 5.2 assists per game and a 3.10 assist/turnover ratio.
Hall ranks second on the team and 12th in the GLVC with 13.6 points per game and leads the team and ranks second in the conference with 77 three-point field goals made. The 77 three-point field goals are two short of the USI single-season record of 79, set by Robin Clark in 1989-90.
