Thompson named region's top player by Daktronics
First USI player to ever earn the award

Chris Thompson

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior forward Chris Thompson was named the Daktronics Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and first team All-Region in the vote by the region's sports information directors. Thompson is the first USI player to earn the Great Lakes Player of the Year award and first team All-Region honors. USI has had six prior players earn second team honors.

Thompson has been named the Daktronic Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and co-GLVC Player of the Year

The Player of the Year and the All-Region awards are just the latest honors for Thompson. He has been named co-GLVC Player of the Year, first team All-GLVC, Division II Player of the Month twice, GLVC Player of the Week four times, and the Most Outstanding Player of the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic this season.

The senior physical education major from Starke, Florida, leads the GLVC and USI in scoring with 18.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He also ranks sixth nationally in field goal percentage and eighth nationally in rebounding.

Thompson also has a team-high 16 double-doubles this season, two-short of the school record of 18 set by former USI All-American and Division II Player of the Year Chris Bowles in 1991-92. He posted a career-high 35 points in the season opener against Caldwell College in the Tip-Off Classic and tied a career-best 15 rebounds in three different games.

The 17th-ranked Screaming Eagles and Thompson will play Drury University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in Rensselaer, Indiana. USI is seeded fourth, while Drury is the fifth seed. The tournament is hosted by Saint Joseph's College, ranked number two nationally and first in the region.
