USI closes 2006 by hosting Harris-Stowe State

Game Notes

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The 5th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team will close out the 2006 calendar year by hosting Harris-Stowe State University Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles-Hornets match-up will be USI's final non-conference game of the regular season.

USI (12-1) has won its last three games, including a pair of in-region games (Wayne State University, 78-69, and Ferris State University, 91-76) in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge before Christmas. The victories give the Eagles a 5-1 record in Great Lakes Region play this season.

USI's senior guard Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) led the squad in the wins over WSU and FSU with 14.5 points per game (ppg). Hall was followed on the scoreboard by senor forwards Marty Wise (New Orleans, Louisiana) and Nick Brooks (Robinson, Illinois), who dropped in 12.5 ppg and 11.0 ppg, respectively.

For the season, Hall is USI's top scorer with 17.1 ppg. Senior center Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida) is second with 13.5 ppg, while junior guard Kenny Page (Indianapolis, Indiana) rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.6 ppg. Wise leads USI in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game (rpg).

Harris-Stowe State (4-12) will be looking to get back on track after losing its last two games. The Hornets' last game before the Christmas break was a loss to Bethal College, 87-82.

HSSU's senior guard Melvin Martin leads the Hornets with 17.4 ppg, while junior guard/forward Mack Caldwell is averaging 13.4 ppg. Junior center Phillip B. Stewart also is scoring in double figures with 10.6 ppg while leading the team in rebounding with 8.2 per game.

The game will be the first meeting between USI and Harris-Stowe State in the history of the programs. USI has won 26 in a row against NAIA opponents.

Saturday's contest also begins a three-game homestand for the Eagles, that concludes after New Year's Day with GLVC contests against Rockhurst University January 4 and Drury University January 6.
