USI men's basketball picked second in the West
UWP and Drury selected as favorites in 2007-08

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Drury University have been selected as the favorites to claim divisional crowns in the 2007-08 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. UW-Parkside is the coaches' choice to claim the GLVC East Division in a poll of the league's head coaches, while Drury is the coaches' choice to top the GLVC West Division.

UW-Parkside (19-13, 10-9 GLVC) received 32 total points and three first-place votes to head the East Division. Northern Kentucky (24-9, 13-6) garnered 27 total points and one first-place vote to finish second in the voting. Lewis University (15-13, 10-9) collected 24 total points and one first-place vote and Kentucky Wesleyan College (13-14, 6-13) received 21 total points and the final two first-place votes to finish third and fourth in the poll, respectively.

Saint Joseph's College (17 points), the University of Indianapolis (14) and Bellarmine University (12) round out the East Division poll.

Drury (21-9, 13-6) collected 34 total points and four first-place votes as the West Division favorite. The Panthers were followed by the University of Southern Indiana (29-6, 14-5), the 2006-07 GLVC Champion. Southern Indiana received 32 total points and the final three first-place votes. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (15-12, 10-9) comes in third in the preseason poll with 24 total points and Quincy (20-10, 12-7) notched 20 total points to finish fourth in the poll.

Rockhurst University (19), the University of Missouri-St. Louis (12) and the University of Missouri-Rolla (6) round out the West Division.

UW-Parkside, led by head coach Luke Reigel (5th season), returns four starters from last year's club that finished third in the GLVC East Division with a 10-9 league record. The Rangers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2007 GLVC Tournament before falling to Drury, 88-75. UW-Parkside earned a bid to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, falling in the first round at top-seed Findlay, 74-60.

The Rangers return leading scorer LaVontay Fenderson (Racine, Wis.) from last year's club. The 6-foot-4 junior forward, an All-GLVC Second Team selection in 2006-07, averaged 16.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season.

Head Coach Steve Hesser, in his fourth season with Drury, will be looking to guide his team to its third straight trip to the GLVC Tournament. Drury posted a 13-6 league record to finish second in the GLVC West Division in 2006-07. The Panthers return four starters from last year's club that advanced to the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The Panthers will be led by 6-foot-5 senior forward Collins Harris (Jefferson City, Mo.) who averaged 17.8 points and 5.1 rebounds a year ago. Harris is a two-time All-GLVC First Team selection and garnered All-Tournament honors after averaging 24 points in two games at last year's event.

The GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll is voted on by the league's 14 head coaches. Each coach selects their predicted order of finish in their division and is not allowed to vote for their own team.

The 2007-08 season begins on Nov. 15. The GLVC-portion of the schedule is set to begin on Nov. 29. The GLVC Championship, featuring the league's top eight teams, will be hosted on March 6-9 at a site to be determined.
