Marvin Gray signs with USI men's basketball
– The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team announced the signing of Marvin Gray
, a 6-foot junior guard from Indiana River Community College, to a national letter of intent for the 2008-09 season.
Gray led Indian River Community College to a 22-9 record and a number five ranking in the Florida Junior College Athletic Association in 2007-08. He led the team with a 14.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.1 steals per game, while also grabbing 4.2 rebounds per contest.
The Freeport, Bahamas, native also earned first team All-FJCAA Southern Conference honors for a second year in a row in 2007-08. He also was named All-State and All-Division both seasons, while receiving the 2008 Pioneer Pride Award (team most valuable player) at the end of this year.
Overall in two years at IRCC, Gray averaged 14.5 points, 5.2 assists, 3.1 steals, and 4.1 rebounds per game. He also scored a two-year high 32 points against Broward Community College and dished out 12 assists against Santa Fe Community College this past season.
"Marvin is a lightning quick guard that can really score," said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes
. "He plays defense and his teammates will love his ability to create for others.
"Best of all, Marvin is a competitor with great character that has the will to win championships," concluded Herdes.
The USI men's basketball team is coming off its 16th straight winning season that has included 15 20-win seasons and 14 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. The Screaming Eagles also have won 27-or-more games four times in the last five seasons and included three GLVC West Division and two GLVC Tournament crowns.
