The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team will open its 2001-02 GLVC title defense in St. Louis, Missouri, at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday, November 24 at 3:15 p.m. The game time was moved up from the originally scheduled time.

The Screaming Eagles, ranked as high as 8th in one of the preseason polls and picked to finish second in the GLVC, are 2-1 in 2001-02 after placing third in the Division II Tip-Off Classic. USI was led by the All-Tournament performances of senior forward Marlowe Currie (St. Louis, Missouri) and junior forward Diondíre Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana). Currie averaged a team-best 23.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg, while Givens averaged 14.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg.

In addition to Currie and Givens, USI has three other players averaging in double figures. Freshman guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) is averaging 15.7 ppg in his first three collegiate games, while sophomore forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) and senior center Ronnie Griffin (Louisville, Kentucky) are averaging 13.7 ppg and 11.7 ppg, respectively. Harris leads the Eagles in rebounds with 7.7 per game.

The Rivermen of UMSL enter the weekend on a winning note, defeating Truman State University on the road, 66-52 in the season opener. Junior guard Jarrett Brown led the Rivermen with 13 points, followed by senior guard Deryn Carter and senior center Scott Kassel with 12 points each.

The Eagles swept the season series with UMSL last season and have won the last nine meetings.

The USI Eagles will finish the road trip with a rare Monday evening contest, November 26, when they travel to Quincy University. The Hawks will open the season Tuesday, November 20, at home against Hannibal-LaGrange College. QU also opens GLVC action Saturday when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan College.

USI has won the last four contests with the Hawks and swept the season series in 2000-01.
