Heaton signs with USI
The University of Southern Indiana cross country/track team announced the signing of Brian Heaton to a letter of intent for the 2002-03 seasons. Heaton is the second men’s runner signed this spring by USI Head Coach Mike Hillyard.
Heaton is a senior at Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana, where he has earned eight letters in cross country and track. The Evansville native won the city championship last year as a junior in the 1600m and 3200m. He also was named All-City, All-SIAC, All-Sectional, and All-Regional.
“Brian has a tremendous work ethic,” said Hillyard of Heaton. “When I saw Brian run for the first time four years ago, it was the middle of the winter, and he was out on the track all alone, just running himself into the ground. I knew then that he would be something special because not many kids are that disciplined at that age.”
Hillyard continued, “Brian has a very clear and planned agenda. He is not into running for any external reasons, but is internally motivated and that is why I am so excited about him.”
