Fleming signs with USI
The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country/track and field team announced the signing of Valparaiso High School graduate Eric Fleming (Valparaiso, Indiana). Fleming is the third runner to sign a National Letter of Intent with Head Coach Mike Hillyard’s Screaming Eagles this spring.
A three-time All-State performer at VHS, Fleming finished 17th in the 2001 IHSAA Cross Country Championships. The previous season, Fleming finished 14th at the state cross country championships. Fleming’s finish in 2000 helped propel VHS to the state championship.
Last week, Fleming finished third in the 1,600-meter run at the IHSAA State Track and Field Championships. His time of 4:19.73 was less than a second off his personal-best (4:18.75).
“Eric is from a winning program and runs with a great deal of confidence,” Hillyard said. “He has the potential to make an impact right away.”
Fleming joins JUCO All-American Will Siemers (Bensenville, Indiana), a transfer from Rend Lake College, and Evansville native Brian Heaton (Reitz) in signing with USI.
The Eagles return 10 of their top 12 runners from 2001, including All-American and defending GLVC champion, Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana), and All-GLVC performers Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana).
