USI men’s cross country/track and field signs another
The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country/track and field team announced that Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana) has signed a letter of intent for the upcoming 2002-03 season. England is the fourth runner to sign with Head Coach Mike Hillyard’s Screaming Eagles.
An eight-time letter winner in cross country and track at Wheeler High School, England ran the 1,600 meters in 4:20.21. Only six seniors in the state of Indiana topped that mark during the spring.
One of the six runners to top that time was fellow Valparaiso native Eric Fleming (Valparaiso High School), who signed with the Eagles in early June.
“Jake was one of the most highly recruited seniors in the state of Indiana,” Hillyard explained. “We are very fortunate to pick up a recruit of his caliber at this late stage.”
Hillyard’s excitement on adding England to the 2002 recruiting class was evident. “The other five Indiana seniors that topped England’s mark signed with Indiana, Brigham Young, Iona, Arizona State and Notre Dame. I think that says a lot about the direction our program is heading and the public perception of USI.”
In addition to England and Fleming, the Eagles have added JUCO All-American Will Siemers (Bensenville, Indiana), a transfer from Rend Lake College, and Evansville native Brian Heaton (Reitz).
The Eagles also return 10 of their top 12 runners from 2001, including All-American and defending GLVC champion, Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana), and All-GLVC performers Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) and Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana).
