USI’s Boberg, Farmer take home championships at Tiger Invitational
Results
University of Southern Indiana track and field performers Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) and Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) took home individual championships Saturday as the Screaming Eagles competed in the 2003 Tiger Indoor Invitational Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Indiana. The women’s squad finished sixth, out of 12 teams, while the men’s squad finished seventh, out of 15 teams.
Boberg, a freshman sprinter/high jumper, posted a 5’8” mark in the women’s high jump to take first place in the event. The jump, once again, set a school record as well as a track record and should rank her in at least the top five in the nation. She entered the week ranked ninth in the country after jumping 5’6” at the Smith-Barney Invitational last weekend.
Freshman Ashleigh Griechen (Valparaiso, Indiana) finished third in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5’1.75”.
Farmer, a junior distance runner, placed first in the women’s 3,000 meters with a meet-record time of 10:18.60. It is the first time during the indoor season that Farmer has placed first.
Other top performers for the USI women’s squad included freshman middle distance runner Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and sophomore distance runners Cassie Bartelt (Huntingburg, Indiana) and Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana). Cooksey finished second in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters, surpassing former meet records in both events. She ran a 2:24.61 in the 800 and a 4:44.8 in the 1,500.
Bartelt and Schneider finished second and third, respectively, in the 5,000 meters. Bartelt ran an 18:50.67 while Schneider finished with a time of 19:09.64. Both times surpassed the meet record for the event.
Sophomore distance runner Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) was the USI men’s top finisher. Schwartz finished second in the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 meters with times of 4:03.49 and 8:47.31, respectively. Junior Matt Cronch (Valparaiso, Indiana) finished third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:46.47 while freshman Robert Garwood (Columbus, Indiana) was not far behind in the event as he was fourth with a time of 15:47.38.
Rounding out the top-five finishers for the USI men’s squad was freshmen distance runners Jake England (Valparaiso, Indiana), Eric Fleming (Valparaiso, Indiana), and Brian Hartsell (Valparaiso, Indiana). England finished fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:54.10 and fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:05.27.
Fleming finished fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:04.84 while Hartsell finished fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:49.84.
USI will run two split squads next weekend, sending one squad to the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis and the other to the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle. The Cannon IV Classic will start on Friday, February 14 and finish the following day while the DePauw Invitational is slated for Saturday, February 15.
