USI competitors rake in awards at GLVC Indoor T&F Championships

Results

The University of Southern Indiana track and field team took home five first-place finishes and had nine competitors earn All-GLVC honors as it competed at the GLVC Championships Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Screaming Eagles women’s squad finished the day in fifth place, with 67 points, while the men’s squad finished the day in sixth place, with 47 points.

Leading the women was freshman middle distance runner Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and freshman high jumper Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) as well as junior middle distance/distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana). Cooksey won the mile and improved upon her NCAA II provisional qualifying time with a meet record time of 4:59.09.

Farmer finished second in the event and also improved her NCAA II provisional qualifying time as she crossed the finish line at 5:03.04. In addition to her mile performance, Farmer finished first in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:35.44.

Boberg won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet 6 inches. Fellow classmate Ashleigh Griechen (Valparaiso, Indiana) finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet 2 inches.

The women’s distance medley relay team also recorded a top finish, crossing the finish line with a track record of 12:28.42.

Boberg, Cooksey, Farmer, and all four members of the distance medley relay team earned All-GLVC honors for their performances. Farmer earned All-GLVC honors in both the mile and the 3,000 meters.

USI’s men’s squad was led by junior distance runner Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) and sophomore middle distance/distance runner Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois). Byrne won the 5,000 meters with an NCAA II provisional qualifying and meet-record time of 14:54.68.

Schwartz ran a 4:16.09 in the mile and an 8:47.84 in the 3,000 meters to finish second in both events. His mile time surpassed the previous meet record and was less than two seconds away from the NCAA II provisional qualifying standard (4:14.80).

Both Byrne and Schwartz earned All-GLVC honors, with Schwartz earning the honor in both the mile and 3,000 meters.

USI’s performers that have posted provisional qualifying marks throughout the indoor season will have to wait and find out whether or not their marks will hold up. Boberg’s mark in the high jump (5 feet 8.25 inches) and Cooksey’s time in the mile (4:59.09) figure to be strong while Farmer (5:03.04 in the mile) and Byrne (14:54.68) will be on the bubble when the final NCAA II declarations are announced.

The NCAA II Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, in Boston, Massachusetts.
