USI track and field has eight top five finishes

The University of Southern Indiana track and field team had eight top five finishes at the Little State Championships Saturday in Marion, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles saw their men’s squad record 36 points to finish ninth, out of 19 teams, while the women’s squad finished in 11th, out of 18 teams, with 24 points.
Junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) finished second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 1,500 meters to lead the men’s squad. Schwartz finished the 5,000 in 15:11.20 while crossing the finish line in the 1,500 with a season-best time of 3:58.02.
Sophomore Will Siemers (Bensenville, Illinois) and junior Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) each record a third-place finish in their respective events. Siemers crossed the finish line in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:27.19 while Thurner improved in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:39.89.
Freshman Eric Fleming (Valparaiso, Indiana) rounded out the top-five finishers on the men’s squad with a fifth-place performance in the 1,500 meters. Fleming crossed the finish line with USI’s third fastest 1,500 time of the season (4:01.20).
On the women’s squad, freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) each recorded top five finishes. Cooksey finished second in the 800 meters (2:24.86) and the 1,500 meters (4:42.77) while Farmer finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:55.18.
Farmer and sophomore Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) each surpassed the stadium record in the 5,000 meters. Schneider, who returned to competition for the first time since the GLVC Indoor Championships, finished the race in 6th with a time of 18:24.72.
The Eagles are expected to run a split squad this weekend, sending runners to the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, and runners to the Indy Relays in Indianapolis on Saturday, April 19.
