USI’s Farmer sets school-record in 3,000 meters,
Thurner qualifies for nationals with steeplechase win

University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) and men’s track and field runner Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) each recorded NCAA II provisional qualifying times Friday night at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee. Farmer’s performance helped the women finish 11th, out of 17 teams, while Thurner’s run helped the men’s squad finish 10th out of 19 teams.
Farmer finished second in the 3,000 meters with a school-record time of 9:50.03. It is the first time in school history that a female runner has broke the 10-minute barrier in the event.
Other top-five finishers for the women’s squad included sophomore distance runners Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) and Cassie Bartelt (Huntingburg, Indiana). Schneider finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:17.04 while Bartelt finished fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:39.97.
Thurner finished first in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal and team-best time of 9:10.11. His time is nearly 15 seconds under the provisional standard.
Junior Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois) barely missed qualifying in his second event of the spring. Schwartz’s 3:54.60 in the mile, good enough for third-place, was just six-tenths of a second off the provisional time.
USI, which ran a split squad at the Indy Relays on Saturday, will reunite next Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, to run in the Hillsdale Gina Relays. Results for the Indy Relays will be available Monday morning.
