USI track and field to compete at GLVC Championships

The University of Southern Indiana track and field team will compete at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Championships Thursday and Friday, May 8-9, in Edwardsville, Illinois.

The Screaming Eagles have had seven competitors post automatic or provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II National Championships. However, three of those seven competitors will need to better their marks to assure themselves a spot in the national championships.

On the menís side, sophomore distance runner Will Siemers (Bensenville, Illinois) will be looking to better his qualifying times in 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Siemers has posted provisional qualifying times in both events. He ranks 23rd in the 5,000 and 37th in the 10,000 meters, nationally.

Competitors that already have strong qualifying times for the men include juniors Mark Thurner (Hebron, Indiana) and Doug Schwartz (Centralia, Illinois). Thurner ranks seventh in the country with his 9:10.11 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while Schwartzís 14:31.31 in the 5,000 meters ranks 15th nationally.

Sophomore distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) and freshman high jumper Abby Boberg (Princeton, Indiana) also are looking to post stronger qualifying marks for the womenís squad. Schneiderís 37:34.18 in the 10,000 meters ranks 30th while Boberg, an All-American during the indoor season, is tied for 16th in the nation with her best outdoor jump of 5 feet, 6 inches.

If Schneider, who has run the 10,000 meters twice this spring, can match her school-record time of 36:36.60 from last season, she would move into the Division II top 12. A jump of 5 feet, 7 inches would boost Boberg into the top six, nationally, and assure her a trip to Edwardsville, the site of the 2003 NCAA II National Championships.

Freshman Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and senior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) have both posted strong qualifying times in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs. Cooksey ranks second in the country in both events, posting a school-record 9:41.37 in the 3,000 and a school-record 16:39.33 in the 5,000.

Farmer has posted qualifying times in three events this season. While her 1,500-meter time will most likely not hold up, Farmerís times in the 3,000 meters (9:50.02) and the 5,000 meters (17:14.11) will assure her of a trip to nationals, which are held May 22-24. She ranks fifth in the 3,000 and 13th in the 5,000.
