USI women capture four titles,
Cooksey completes sweep of GLVC freshman honors
The University of Southern Indiana women’s track and field team took home four individual championships Thursday and Friday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles finished sixth in the team standings with 60 points.
A day after sophomore distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) took home the gold in the 10,000 meters, junior Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.54.
Freshmen Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) and Abby Boberg (Bicknell, Indiana) won the GLVC title in the 3,000 meters and high jump, respectively. Cooksey, who picked up GLVC “Freshman of the Year” honors for the third time this year, ran the 3,000 in 9:48.37 while Boberg’s winning jump of 5 feet, 7 ¼ inches ranks fifth, nationally, and virtually assures her of a trip to the NCAA II National Championships.
Freshman Ashleigh Griechen (Valparaiso, Indiana) finished second in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 3 ¾ inches to pick up All-GLVC honors. Boberg, Cooksey, Farmer, and Schneider all earned All-GLVC honors with their winning performances.
USI will find out the fate of its seven competitors that have posted provisional qualifying times for the NCAA II National Championships sometime next week. The NCAA II National Championships are slated for May 22-24 in Edwardsville.
